This photo captures a perfect instance of a nurse log doing it's part to sustain life in the Hoh Rain Forest of the Olympic National Park (far western edge of Washington State). Some of these trees reach over 300ft in height and up to 23 feet in diameter! This rain forest receives over 12 FEET of rain each year but we happened to be there on an incredibly warm, sunny day.
When one of these ENORMOUS trees dies and falls to the ground, it's decaying trunk becomes a fantastic source of rich nutrients for the next cycle of life. The nurse log in this tree was approximately five feet in diameter and over 150 feet long.
